BTC’s Algebra I Academy provides Black Algebra I teachers with the opportunity to re-imagine their instructional practices through a more liberatory lens and reimagine who they are as Black Algebra I educators, all while building their own content and conceptual mastery of Algebra I. As a result, students develop a stronger conceptual understanding of math, build a positive racial math identity, and see themselves as part of the equation and not the problem.
Our framework, which is rooted in Black teaching traditions, will use real-world examples to teach concepts like operations of inequalities. Our work also gives teachers a historical context to Math’s African origins.
An overwhelming amount of educational research has shown that the most significant problem of Black students in America’s schools is the wide (and widening) achievement gap in mathematics. The National Assessment of Educational Progress data suggests that many Black students typically score below their peers in all mathematical content areas and are not experiencing instructional practices consistent with the recommendation suggested by the National Council Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
The BTC Algebra 1 Academy is a 2-year immersive cohort learning experience for teachers in Georgia designed to address the problem of how traditional Algebra 1 is taught using the framework of BTC’s Black Liberatory Pedagogy.
When it comes to teaching Algebra 1, one size does not fit all, and teachers must cultivate a liberatory math learning environment, build relationships with students and further strengthen their connections between their history, their communities, and using problem solving to reimagine a new world.
