BTC’s K-3 Literacy Academy teachers will participate in a 2-year researched-based professional development experience with the goal to increase teacher’s literacy content knowledge and increase their use of effective literacy instructional practices.

The integration of theory and practice will allow participants to read texts and engage in collaborative reflection and discussion that deepen their theoretical content knowledge and enable them to make deep sense of their own understanding and beliefs about Black liberatory pedagogy and early literacy instruction, culminating in an action research project that realizes significant student growth and proficiency in literacy, as well as an increased positive racial identity in students.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress data suggests that Black children lag their peers in the development of foundational early literacy skills by early elementary school, which contributes to the racial gaps seen in reading and other academic areas through elementary school and beyond. These racial gaps are really gaps in Black children’s access to effective literacy instruction.

The BTC K-3 Literacy Academy is a 2-year professional development experience designed for early career elementary teachers in the South focused on K-3 literacy theory, effective literacy instructional practices, and BTC’s Black Liberatory Pedagogy.

In its pilot year, 54 teachers will be accepted into the Academy as pairs or trios from each school site, providing peer support and collaborating as a school innovation team. A letter of commitment from a school Principal is also required for participation.
